Why turn down 700amp controller with stock motor?
I've been told it is best to turn down a 700amp controller when running it on a stock motor. Just wondering why?? What is the danger (or disadvantage) of leaving it set on full power?

Re: Why turn down 700amp controller with stock motor?
If you get into a stall situation where the motor is trying to go but the tires are both stuck or the cart is against a curb the motor could draw enough amperage to meltdown.
500 amps is considered the safe limit for stock series motors and 400a for stock sepex motors. Sepex motors being more easily destroyed. |

Does this same logic apply to stock series motors after a 36 to 48 v conversion?

I would recommend that if your tires stop because of too much load for any reason, take your foot off the pedal. I don't care if you have a stock 275 amp controller, if you are holding the cart on a hill with throttle, you are going to burn something up.
It's like holding yourself on a hill with clutch on a standard tranny car. For a moment it's OK, after that your asking for trouble. |

if your going to run a stock motor on 700 amps you better run all 2ga cable. I melted the S1 stud right off my motor

I did upgrade to 2ga cables and rev contactor, but was just wondering. I did turn my new controller down to 500a before burying it down between the new trojans but was thinking if i would have left it at 700 what could have happened. Or if i was missing out on any more speed??

No speed lost by turning it down. Minor amount of torque lost when near zero speed/rpm (when you stomp the gas from a stop. Those of us who have cooked stock motors with too much amps & more heat than stock motor can take will advise you turn it down for stock motor. Stock motor can only do so much.

never turned mine down , ran it to the stud melted off. It took 4 years for that 36 volt motor to finally stop making a connection lol . Then called PQ and fixed the problem , almost 3 years now .

2guage cables will help you get more amps to the motor so you can burn it up quicker. LOL.
