Question 440 artic cat engine going In

Want to put a 440 artic cat engine in a 87 ez-go. Question, can I still use the starter/generator so that I can still use the forward/reverse switch? Any helpful insight would be appreciated.

Is that Arctic cat engine going to run in reverse the way an 87 two stroke engine does?

The rear end doesn't have reverse. The stock engine runs both directions.

The stock drive clutch has the starter pulley mounted on it. If you can use that, all you would have to do is figure out how, and where you want to mount the starter.

That's what I'm hoping for or find one that will fit the shaft of the 440

Another thing to consider is whether or not the starter generator has enough oomph to turn that sled motor over and also if it will spin it up fast enough as you're going to be dealing with a lot more compression to overcome than the stock motor ever dreamed of having especially (i'm assuming) it's a twin. Make sure also that it will in fact run backwards. That technology didn't seem to make it to sleds until the early 2000's as far as I know. not saying it won't but I don't know if it's set up to do so (ports, timing etc). This should be a screamer when you get it in hahaha.

Well I got it in and it does scream going backwards lol, it starts the same direction no matter which way you wrap the cord and pull it (have not mounted the start/genny yet) so I am thinking I need to put timing at exactly TDC or use all the ignition system that was in the cart instead of the snowmobiles ignition. Experiment some today I hope.

I'll be very interested in what you come up with. On my off road buggy (avatar) I'm running a 485 Yammy sled engine in it but never tried to crank it over backwards. It's a fan cooled so it would be drawing air backwards but reverse only needed for short bits.. You get this to work well, I'll be picking your brain hahaha be nice to have rev. in the toy.

Well couldn't get pulley off so went with electronic reverse, works good.
