87 ezgo will not start
Got an 87 ezgo, 2 cycle 244cc, (2pg I believe)
sputters at best a few back fires, smelled like old fuel so I drained tank , added new fuel. seems like only a limited amount of fuel reaches new filters, I did disconnect fuel pump line and it seemed to shoot out pretty good. I will recheck. I gave it a general tune-up,(plug and filters) changed igniter, seemed like weak intermittent spark. I did remove carb and check and clean, seemed ok. I was wondering about reed valves, but see they are scarce to find. after cranking for a while, plug does get wet. compression was 125psi I am replacing accell and choke cables which were broken. I found an 85 repair manual on this site, seems close to mine, hope it helps some. I seen oil injection cable was disconnected, so I will be plugging that off and mixing fuel n oil any other direction or advise on what to check? |

Re: 87 ezgo will not start
Did you try starting it without the muffler?

Re: 87 ezgo will not start
The fuel pump can still work with a ripped lower diaphragm.
Take the pump apart, and check both diaphragms. |

Re: 87 ezgo will not start
How long have you owned the cart? Mine was running progressively worse every weekend, I did a compression test which came up good, 120 psi. I cleaned the carb changed the carb and finally on e it struggled so bad up a hill I took on the rebuild. Every lower end gasket was leaking, crank seals were shot and the piston was scored about 1/16 of an inch in multiple places. I ordered a piston the was .5mm over and crank seals and bearings, they sent a standard piston and after I contemplated it for a few hours I honed the head myself and ran with it. After I got everything sealed up nice it gave me 5 minutes of the best it's ever run, quiet powerful.....then took a crap lol in my constant rushing around I never put locktite on the Crank seals (as pointed out by another member in my post) and one most likely popped out as Ive lost lower engine compression and now it won't run at all (still showing 120-130 compression at the plug mind you) I'm going to fix this in the morning. Where I'm going with this is I did not realize how important the lower and being completely sealed was to the cart actually running and running powerfully, One popped seal mine won't run at all.... After you've exhausted fuel spark and air I would check here next, a good sign of this ( again as pointed out by another member in my post) is a lack of fuel flow as it depends on lower end conpression

Re: 87 ezgo will not start
Also do you have a timing light? Have you checked the timing?

I have a timing light... is there timing to check on a 2 stroke?
I'm still waiting on fuel pump kit. should be here tomorrow. I just bought the cart, it has never run since I owned it , a few weeks I will crawl under and try and check seals. |

Re: 87 ezgo will not start
Crawling under it will not tell you a thing.
You can look down at the rear seal between the clutch, and engine. You can see if it's popped out, but you cannot tell if it is worn, and leaking. The front seal is under the flywheel. You cannot see it at all. Remove the fuel pump, spin the engine with your finger over the hole. See how much pressure there is. While the pump is off, TAKE IT APART. Visually inspect the diaphragms. You won't have to keep guessing then. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-e...fuel-pump.html http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-e...aft-seals.html |

Re: 87 ezgo will not start
Yes, under the flywheel the timing can be altered by spinning the pulsar mounting plate. There are also timing marks under the flywheel fan cover. There was a post on here how to do it step by step, let me see if I can find it. I wouldn't mess with timing until you've ruled out fuel air and compression, if your going to be popping the flywheel to inspect the crank seals you should check the timing before you do.
