'96-'98 Club car battery light flashing when key off
Hey guys,
Got a '96-98 club car I was looking at buying. It is a friend of my family member. It looks decent, and we just want something to roll around the neighborhood with. Anyways I took it on a test run. The cart did well on flat ground, and really did well down a hill. The issue is when going uphill. I stopped at the bottom of the hill and put the pedal to the medal and it would shudder very badly for a few seconds. The shuddering would stop and the cart was going up hill about rather slowly. I noticed that if I didnt slam the pedal down, the cart wouldnt shudder, but would get going very slowly. I noticed that when the key was off and removed from the ignition, the battery light would flash on for 4 seconds, off, and then on for 20 seconds. Does anyone know what that indicates? Battery voltage read 38.5v and the batteries are less than a year old. Thanks guys! |

lotus623,
I would say first off that the shuddering and the light tells you that the batteries are at issue. Best case scenario is that they badly need to be charged, worst case scare, you need to buy new ones. It probably has 6 8 volt batteries, and they will run you around $600.00. Read the sticky above entitled everything about batteries to see if maybe those just need to be charged. Aflyer |

If it is a series cart (which it probably is), shuddering is a sign of weak batteries. When you put it to the floor quickly, there is more of a draw than when you gradually accelerate. That is also why the light is flashing, low battery voltage. Is this a 36v cart, and do you know the age of the batteries? Also the serial number would help us identify exactly what you have.

Re: '96-'98 Club car battery light flashing when key off
Hey guys thanks for the replies. Serial number is A0044-953965. 36v series cart.
You guys are totally right about the battery issue. I checked the fluid and 4 out of 6 batteries had water down past the plates. I filled the batteries back up with distilled water, cleaned all the wire ends, and threw it on charge for a few hours and the shuddering went completely away. Now the issue is that when I am climbing up a decent grade, the cart is very slowwwwww. The guys selling the cart swears that the batteries were put in in October (6months ago) and that he only charged them a few times since they were Installed. The date on the batteries is June 2016. I have a hard time believing that they would have lost that much electrolyte in 6 months. The batteries are from US battery. |

The date code should be on each battery, either a sticker, or stamped. sometimes stamped on the terminals.
Should be like a K6 if they were October 16. Aflyer Last edited by Aflyer; 04-23-2017 at 08:49 PM.. Reason: add content |

Re: '96-'98 Club car battery light flashing when key off
Ok new info. I looked under the seat and it says my controller isnfor - 48v cart. According to my serial number I possibly have a 48v cart. There are 6-6v batteries in this cart. I am getting 38.5v across all 6 batteries, 6.68v each. Maybe the guy who put the batteries in made a boo-boo?

Hey rotus623 check out this sticky from above:
http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/elect...olf-carts.html I don't see an AO Vin prefix in the book, maybe it says AQ? If the 0044 is correct, then it is a 2000, built in week 44. Maybe one of the experts will jump in and help you figure out what it is. Aflyer |

You are correct I believe it is A00, year 2000. I was told it was a 96-98 but you know how that goes. What I am really trying to figure out is if I have a 36or 48v cart. The tag by the controller says 48v controller.

Is the charger cord end round that plug into cart. If so you have a 48 volt cart.
