So which is it, then? My first set of batteries lasted 8 years and I'm into year four or five on the new set. But I put my cart on the charger after every use.
And make sure cells never run dry, etc.

Keep doing that. It is all in the science of the batteries in regards to cell life and sulfation characteristics.
