It was a little difficult to get the armature shaft out of and back into the bearing. I used a heat gun as per the service manual on the back shell to expand things a bit. then I put two wood blocks under the motor edges to keep the armature above the workbench. Then a few taps on a socket placed on the shaft and it popped out. The bearing sounded dry so I used snap ring pliers to remove it then opened up the seal with a pick tool and cleaned it with brake cleaner, then repacked it with grease. After that it felt fine again. I put a smear of grease on the shaft to help it back into the bearing and used a piece of wood and hammer to tap it back into the bearing. It all went back together smoothly. A trick I have learned is to place a 2x4 between the axle and the battery tray as a way to support the motor when you pull it or put it on. You can lift up on the 2x4 a little to get to the right height for the bolts to line up and avoid resting weight on the motor and input shaft.

P.S. I forgot to thank [cgtech] for suggesting the brushes. I had a feeling that was it and someone else thinking the same thing was when I figured it was worth taking a look inside the motor.
