Battery help
I have a 2008 President 48v with 4 t-1275 trojans.
After 12hr charge the pack reads 50v each battery reads 12.5. After 10 min of running pack reads 49v with each battery at 12.2. While driving the pick drops to 44v at start and cruises at 45.3 each battery drop to 11v and cruise at 11.3. Top speed last year was about 13mph this year I’m at 9mph Batteries are at least 6 years old. By those numbers are batteries about done? |

Re: Battery help
You are dead on with your assumption. They are breaking down internally at the plates and can no longer sustain the current transfer. They will probably start heating up more, bubbling more, and taking a longer to recharge. You may also begin to see some swelling. You can continue to use them until they will no longer suit your needs - which sounds like now....

Re: Battery help
Thanks Nole for the confirmation. It’s tough to drop that kinda coin. But we’re headed out on vacation the end of the week and take the carts with us. Should I stick with the Trojans or are there other decent options?

Re: Battery help
Trojans, US Batteries or Crowns are pretty much your top of the line. See who will give you the best price and buy them. I literally just exhausted my US Batteries that were coded 6/2010 (8 years!) but will be going Lithium now...
Remember to break in those new batteries correctly as they will be weak for the first 20-25 uses getting stronger after each charge. |

Re: Battery help
Is there a big advantage to lithium? Are they compatible with stock set up or are they a much bigger price jump?

Re: Battery help
Lithium will run you a much higher tag on the front end but are likely to last significantly longer and give you much more range.

Re: Battery help
A good lithium pack can yield you 58.4vdc (Leaf batteries) and have 60ah's and they deliver 3250 watts with a driveable distance of 25/30 miles and are capable of a much higher delivery and a lot more reserve and usable capacity. They are capable of 80% discharge where acid is only to 50%, they are ~65 pounds compared to ~320 pounds with a lead acid pack (and there is no mess, no watering, neutralizing, etc). They are good for 1200 cycles at 100%, 4000 cycles at 80% and stories are told to be between 8000-10000 cycles at 50%. Do it yourself kits are ~$1200-$1300 and an assembled kit is a few hundred more. It is all what you want, are capable of and have the resources for....
You can also ask/discuss with PingEye3 as he is a front-runner on lithium in regards to how it works, the designs, implementation, etc. |

Re: Battery help
So I got 4 new T-1275 Trojans and installed them on Monday.put the charger on them overnight. While charging pack read 64v. At the end of charge read 50.4 each battery at 12.6. Took it for a spin of about 10 minutes and there is no noticeable increase in speed or torque over the old pack. Still runs at about 9-10mph. And I also noticed that in the middle of riding it seemed to just loose all power for a second and then regained power again. So I’m thinking I have some other issue that’s costing me the speed and power other than the batteries. Where should I look to next?

Re: Battery help
Yeah I hear ya. I did read that article before I got the batteries just so a I would do it right. Do you think that they will get that much better over time? I guess I was just a bit over excited thinking that brand new batteries and $800 would at least feel stronger than that old pack.
