Any easy ideas on how to grip the male thread to pull the crank through? I see all sorts of tools listed but nothing for the crank side .

I got my crank installed without tools. I heated up the case and bearings, froze the crank, oiled it up with some PB Blaster. Slipped together with a rubber mallet and a block of wood. I know that's not the way it's "supposed" to be done, but it worked. An old school mechanic gave me that idea.

Having boogered a crank in my youth, I went with a puller. I went to the local hardware store and played erector set until I came up with a solution. I doubled up two washers and welded them to the “bottom” a coupling making a steel cup with a hole in the bottom to slide over the crankshaft. I used the crank nut to cinch it down. I used a 1/2” all thread bolt, a stack of washers, and a nut to assemble the pull shaft through a threaded bushing.
Add a chunk of thick metal I had laying around with a big hole in it for a pull plate, another nut and washer, and a 7” piece of 2” PVC. Works like a champ! The trick was getting a coupling big enough that I could use the original crank nut and get a socket into it to snug the nut. All this had to fit into a two inch tube. Interesting dilemma, but perseverance pays....lol
