Lock Nuts on Batteries?
Getting ready to put new batteries in my cart, daughter ruined my Leaf Hybrid batteries (kept driving it below low voltage). Going to 48v since I've upgraded everything else. Is there a problem using the lock nuts with nylon on the battery terminal posts? Provided I can find them in the right size/thread, it seems this would solve the problem you sometimes have with the regular battery terminal nuts vibrating a little loose and burning up the ends of the battery cables.
Let me know what you think. |

Re: Lock Nuts on Batteries?
I have used them on my boat batteries for years. I have never had a problem with them.

Re: Lock Nuts on Batteries?
For some reason a lot of people will say don't use them. I have used them and will continue to do so.

I just happened to take a photo of the ones I have been using so I could grab some more.

Re: Lock Nuts on Batteries?
The loosening is not from vibration, its the softness of the lead.

i have melted the nylon out of them on my old motor but thats another story. I dont use them anymore but i would watch that you dont over torque them if you do .

Re: Lock Nuts on Batteries?
The Nylon Locking will melt a lot sooner than the lead will
Lead/Melting point 621.5°F 327.5°C ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Nylon Locking Nut Temperature resistance Operating temperature range between -40 °C and 140 °C peak condition 140 °C = 284 °F |

Re: Lock Nuts on Batteries?
With proper care, you don't need Nylock nuts. I have never used them on a battery in all my years. But I imagine the opinion here would be similar to that of the question of locking washers.
