Re: How to remove Input Gear???
In similar situations for industrial equipment, I have cut a deep well in half and welded a piece of pipe between the halves. You can have a socket as deep as you need it.

Re: How to remove Input Gear???
Just measured the shaft to the motor and it's 3/4" so the thru socket isn't going to work. Now I'm stumped. Is there a specific tool maybe?

Re: How to remove Input Gear???
I found a deep socket to fit the nut.. 1 1/4" if anyone else needs to know. It is impossible to hold the shaft in the gear case with vice grips. The blades on the worm gear are hard and super sharp and cut through not only the rubber I was using for padding but cut through the teeth on the vice grips. I am even wondering how this nut would come off as it looks like it is fused to the shaft. Here are some pics...

Re: How to remove Input Gear???
The flange on that nut has been creased into the splines on the shaft. It will be really hard to break the nut loose without somehow "lifting" out those creases. If it were me, I would get my propane torch and heat the creases then use some kind of tool (small chisel, punch) to lift the creases out of the splines. Then you should be able to break the nut loose.
