one should be a ground and one should be hot off the key correct?

Yes
Except some of the older carts that had a negative switch. Regardless, one to each terminal will get you what you need. |

How many volts should I have at the key switch I'm only reading 12

i bypassed the gauge and key and presto the solenoid engages...im gonna mess with the power supply wires to the key and see why im only getting 12v

I did not think there was a positive and negative to the key switch. The key is simply a switch that breaks the power running to the solenoid so it will not activate until the key is turned on. So, from 36v+ from the battery bank to the key switch, then from the key switch to the solenoid...or micro switch in the f and r, Don t remember now. If you put + voltage to one side of the key and ground the other side it will just short and burn something when you turn the key on.

Unless I missed some context or something. I think 36v+ to key, key to MC in f and r, then to + side of solenoid. That way the solenoid will only engage when key is on and put in to forward or reverse....i think... :-/
