motor rebuild problem
2007 club car precedent
I broke 2 studs trying to remove rusted bolts on the motor. I took the motor to a local golf cart shop for repairs. They did a rebuild which included new studs, new insulators and new brushes. After reinstalling the motor I drove it less than 200 ft. The motor immediately made a weird high pitch noise as i drove, in a few seconds I could smell it burning, then it began to smoke. What could have happened? |

Re: motor rebuild problem
Definitely sounds like an internal failure which is pretty much out of your area. I would remove it and take it back to them and let them inspect it. Something was faulty and they will have to pull it down to inspect it. If you try to, it will void any warranty you would have had.

Re: motor rebuild problem
Thanks for the response. Could you comment on anything specific that could have caused this issue?
IE: Internal wiring error during rebuild? If it 's simply mis-wired would it just not run? A possible short? But the high pitch whining noise I'm guessing indicates there was friction of some sort. What condition could exist for parts to rub against each other? |

Re: motor rebuild problem
That could be a whole host of issues, but I would speculate it was in the armature. Again, only an inspection will yield the exact answers.....

Re: motor rebuild problem
Turns out they installed the wrong brush set.
They are replacing them with the correct set. Due to the heat and smoke that occurred, I am concerned about the possibility of damage to other components. Is this likely? |

Re: motor rebuild problem
If the brushes failed probably not. Its not like being hooked up wrong or an internal winding failure.

Re: motor rebuild problem
Brushes wouldn’t effect too much especially after you only drive it 200 feet or so.

Re: motor rebuild problem
Please let us know how it holds up. May I ask how much the rebuild cost? I came very close to needing a couple of studs replaced. Thanks.

Re: motor rebuild problem
Yeah, somethin' smells. How the hell DO you install the wrong brush set? Especially if you have the old ones there on the bench next to you?
