I'd knock it down to poor maintenance practice. Without knowing more details it's impossible to say what started it, but something in the range of neglected batteries, or incorrect charging habits would be the most likely.
There is a reason I don't leave carts charging overnight in my shop.
Shouldn't do that, the acid might spill out!

Ok, what next?? Dropped it, jumped on it, and sat and read it a Wall Street Journal.....

Would be hard to hurt it as it is mounted in the carrier.....

My guess is that they did something really stupid like put sealed automotive batteries in a golf cart.
