Default Primary Clutch Help- Briggs 23hp

Hi folks, looking for some help with my primary clutch fitted to a briggs 23hp. I noticed the other day the clutch was engaged when I tried to start, tapped the outer casing and it returned to the correct position. I've since taken the engine out and when I push the clutch apart most of the springs have broken. Does anyone know where I could buy a kit to refurb the clutch or am I best buying a new one? I've tried the usual Internet research although not had much luck. Any help is appreciated as always. Thanks!

Excellent thanks! Do you know how I can tell what clutch I have installed? It came with the cart.

That's a Comet 780 or 780 copy. Take the clutch off and see if you can find any writing on it, look for "Comet" and/or "780". If it's a copy it's likely a cheap chinese version and I would not rebuild it. If it's a genuine Comet 780, as long as the sheaves are straight and true and the inside of the clutch is not worn you could rebuild it. If money is not an issue, I'd go ahead and get a new genuine Comet 780 replacement, that clutch looks like it's been around a while.

It looks like a comet 780 type with the yellow spring set up. It may just need the springs replaced and possibly the bushings on the weights. I would certainly rebuild it for the small $'s those parts cost The yellow spring set is $15

one last question... can the ramp plate be removed and springs etc replaced without removing the entire unit from the shaft?

Yes. Once the ramp plate is off the springs, weights, bushings and pins are all there for examination or replacement.

Although not recommended in the comet 780 manual the comet sled clutches they do recommend a teflon dry lube. So I have been using the Blaster Dry Lube on my 780R. It keeps it a lot smoother and cleaner with all the salt water and sand that gets all over the engine compartment here.

Thanks I will check that out. Looks like it is a genuine Comet. I've ordered new ramp plate, pivot pin kit, yellow springs and weights just to be sure. Having just checked the order it looks like I purchased the 72gram weights so I guess will need to change for the 100g+??? Any ideas. Will the 72 and yellow spring combo work well?
