How to take 1990 Marathon from 36v to 48v?
Hey Guys. I've only been here a short time and have already learned a ton (I think). My mother-in-law recently picked up a 1990 Marathon Freedom to drive around our neighborhood (and for the gradnkids to have fun on). The cart is in awesome shape for its age and appears to be completely stock. Although I love the way it looks I would really like to get some more speed out of her. Therefore I am thinking of going from 36v to 48v. I've read over several threads on this, but it seems like each model has different requirements depending on whether it is resitor based, DCS or PDS.
So, what do you think I need to convert this classic to 48v? Obviously 2 additional 6v batteries and 4 new cables. I would prefer not to use Gorno's conversion style only because the cart lives at grandma's and I don't want her to have to run two chargers so I would prefer a system that would let me just get a new 48v charger for her. Thanks for any input. Dave |

Is the cart solid state or resistor?

I'm not sure. I'm going to swing by there today and check it out. If it is resistor I should see the coil shaped resistor somewhere, right? What would I be looking for if it is solid state?

Resistor coils located in a small box in the center of the cart with like 4 cables connected to the top of it? Solid state speed controller under a black plastic hood same location...... That right Gman?

If it's solid state, there will be a rectangular box (possibly finned) with large and small cables leading to it.

Wow, that thing is clean on the inside. I am in the process right now of the switch over. I have everything out sanding and painting the battery compartment right now.

Clean as a whistle You need to figure out if the controller is rated for 36-48 volts.....There should be some ID on it?

The controller is the key here. There might be an ID on the bottom panel.

Re: How to take 1990 Marathon from 36v to 48v?
The previously owner obviously babied it. I looked as closely on the controller (that's the box with fins, right?) and didn't see anything on it. I guess I may have to take it off to find out. Assuming it isn't rated for 48v, which controller will I want to buy? And, will I see significant increases in speed by going to 48volts in a solid state cart? I don't need torque or range. Aside from possibly a new controller, what else will be required?
I really appreciate everyone's help. Dave |
