Hello have not posted for some time. I now have a Yamaha gas been running fir 3 years . Started right up this spring. We use it in campground. Stated smoking almost immediately. started using oil. by week 2 started backfiring and loss of power. Did not have time for it so parked it. Is it worth tearing down and rebuilding? believe it to be early 2000s. I have it tucked away right now. Will get vin later. I have many years as a auto tech. Just looking for advice

Without knowing exactly what model Yamaha you have or what shape it's in your cart is likely worth at least $1,000 if it's in rough shape and as much as a few thousand if it's in great shape. With your auto skills, you are likely looking at $300-$400 for a fix depending on the specific problem. Yes, it's worth it to fix that bugger.

Did you treat the gas when you put it away for the winter? Maybe it has some varnish build up? Also, it the float stuck open it might have gas in the oil, that will make it smoke.

I'd take the carb off, clean it really good, reinstall. Drain and refill with fresh gas. Change the oil and filter. Change the carb. See how that does.
