Having the solenoid's black and orange wires switched is the same as having the diode installed backwards, so B+ was shorted to B- via three switches and the diode.

One, or more, of the three switches was taken out when the pedal was pushed and will have to be replaced to get solenoid to click.
Attached is a schematic with the solenoid activation circuit highlighted.

------------

In and of itself the solenoid coil isn't polarized, so it doesn't matter which of the small terminals the orange wire (which connects to B+ via the three switches) connects to. On the other hand, the diode is polarized and the banded end must be attached to the same small terminal the orange wire is attached to.

The purpose of the diode is to reduce pitting on the switch contacts and it is not needed for troubleshooting, so leave it off until you get the new drive system working.

Once everything checks out right, install the diode with the end with the band on it connected to the same terminal the orange wire is connected to.

Thank you so much for the info. Now I have a new POT box but the old one had 2 black and 2 white wires and this one has brown and blue. Does it matter which the blue and brown go to as long as it is consistent with the order of the black and white? I am afraid of shorting something else out.

I'd trace the Brown and Blue wire out to see where they are attached in the pot box.

There is a set of Blue and Orange (Might look like Brown) that goes to the pedal switch.
