Could you do it? Yes. Should you do it, probably not. If you dont have a way to closely monitor the 12v while its under load, you are risking killing the 12v.

Wouldn't he need a different diode and resistor on the solenoid?

Some say the resistor needs changed (diode is fine). I dont know any reason the resistor must be changed, other than "everyone says to". Never heard of any failure from using the original resistor with 48v (i did it, no problem). It would still do its job of protecting the solenoid contacts (its only job). Also will not affect performance.
