Is a FE350 a drop in replacement for FE290?
I have a 1995 DS. Is it an easy swap to replace the FE290 with an FE350?
TIA |

Yup... sort of...
The FE350 has the same footprint as an FE290! BUT... your 95 has a counterclockwise transaxle, most readily available FE350's will be clockwise rotation! |

Thanks Lockman. Looks like the FE290 will remain in place.

I saw a YouTube video talking about changing rotation. Recall it needs different can & oil pump indexting. Do a YouTube search.

So are you telling me that I need to order a special engine for my 95 or replace both the engine and the transaxle? |

Sort of related: I was helping my nephew with a small all terrain buggy. It has one of those ebay engines with a semi-auto trans w/ 4 forward gears and a reverse. My mind was going as I looked at it. A "shifter buggy" would be big fun.

Re: Is a FE350 a drop in replacement for FE290?
ReelTight, to your question, I'm thinking that the transaxle issue could be addressed by using the "other" lever position to go forward. Reverse position would be where forward once was.etc...
I don't know if forward & reverse are same gear ratios however. Somebody must have tried this already..Maybe they can share what they learned. |

Forward & reverse gear ratios are different. It makes it slower than you expect, but it can be done. Good for pulling power, not so much for tp speed.

I have a CCW clone engine with a unitized Kawasaki rear end. I installed 6:1 gears which makes my new forward ratio about 9:1.
