91 2 stroke runs significantly better in reverse

This Marathon is my first cart. I just bought it and have been working on a few issues to get it running better. I put the 6098 belt on it after reading about it here. That helped a good bit. I'm noticing that it seems to run faster and pull harder in reverse than forward. I have my compression tester loaned out so I can't test compression in both directions at the moment. Would a difference in compression each way make such a noticeable difference in performance? Something in the clutches?

It's only a seat of the pants feel, but I'd guess it runs 25%-30% better in reverse. It doesn't run bad forwards, but the difference is noticeable. I'd love to get it to run as good in forward.

Sounds like ignition timing is off. There are 2 trigger bumps on a ring on the back of the flywheel, approx 18BTDC in F, 21BTDC in R. The pickup is on an adjustable plate.

Note the slots in plate, Phillips-head screws holding it in place.
