Default Issue in Forward

First off I want to say I have gained a tremendous amount of information about carts from the people here and I hope I can find the answer to the issue I am having. I have a new to me 2004 gas TXT, when I put in forward it feels like it pops out of gear and I have a ratcheting sound like gears are not meshing. When I first step on the gas it seems to have to rev up a good bit before it will engage. Is this a clutch issue, rear end or axel.

Thanks
Joe

I have more experience with this issue on Yamahas, but the first thing I would do is check the shifter cables. Make sure it is pulling the rear end far enough into gear.

Thanks Lukel, went out checked where the shifter cable attaches to the linkage on the rear and could move it about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch so I adjusted the cable a little and did a little test run starting and stoping going up the driveway and so far so good.
