Compound or not
Posted this over in the mod section with little response, so I'll repost here..
I got a "new to me" gas club car a couple of weeks ago and it had the original cream/tan factory paint. My wife said "No way will I drive that thing with that color", so I decided to paint. Or she decided I would paint. Black. Disassembled the cart and took off the body. I bought two cans of adhesion promoter (duplicolor) at O'reily's, and 5 cans of black Krylon Fusion for plastic (gloss) and 3 cans of krylon Maxx clear. I diligently sanded the body with black paper 320g, washed the body, applied a grease and dirt remover, dried again, and then applied the adhesion promoter. 2-coats for each body piece. Then I applied the bomb paint allowing a few minutes between the first three coats. Waited about 1-1.5 hours, lightly sanded with a scotch bright pad (the grey one), lightly washed away any paint dust, then applied two more coats. No runs, I'm happy. Looks good at this point. I let this dry for about 5-6 hours, then with a white scotch bright pad, I lightly sanded the body and carefully washed and dried again. Then I applied the clear coat. 2-cans on the rear body section, and one on the front body section. this netted 3-coats for each body section. I ended up using 1.5 cans of adhesion promoter, 5 cans of black (3 for the rear body, 2 for the front body, and the 3 cans for the clear coat. I think I'm happy with it....but here's my question: Its been three days since I've finished painting. If I rub, the panels, there is a clear dust that comes off (which I expected). Should I compound the body panels now or wait until the paint is fully chip proof? (bomb can label states chip proof after 7 days) Should I NOT compound at all? If so, what brand should I use? Elbow grease or go buy a orbital buffer? I already know that this won't be auto-body quality, but I'd like to be proud of it. Thanks, CM |

Re: Compound or not
chip proof maybe not scatch proof I would wait till it dries good, and I would start with a good soft cloth and some liquid wax
