Default G9, NewBatts, Lestronic, Egg Smell?

I have a 92 Yamaha G9 36V with 6 new (04/08 stickers) Energizer GC2s. I am using a Lestronic II model 07850 (36 Volts DC, 25 Amps tapering to 8 Amps at 45 Volts DC) to charge them.
I put the cart on the charger and the meter read about 20amps. As it charged it went down to about 8amps after about 5hrs. I got a little nervous when I touched the charger and it was pretty hot. Not burning my hand but still hot. Also, I could hear the batteries bubbling so I lifted the seat and could smell a little bit of rotten egg smell. I have read that this is the batteries leaking and could be explosive.

Questions:
These batteries are new and have good water levels.
1. Do I need to panic about the smell?
2. Will this clear after maybe a few discharge/charge cycles?
3. Should the charger get very hot?
4. Could I be using the wrong charger?

The smell your smelling is hydrogen gas being created by the charge cycle, its completely normal. In my experiance the bubbing will get less and less over a few cycles but it will still do it. Just don't light a match. (remember the Hindenburg) You could prop the seat up so it can air out as you charge. The charger should not get "that" hot, just warm.

The lester charger is fine. Its one of the best ones on the market.
