G1 aftermarket piston ring Placement
I’ve got some after market piston kits for my G1 engines but unsure what ring goes on top or if it matters. Service manual states Yamaha piston rings are marked RN for top and R for bottom. The aftermarket rings are both marked with a R and their over size with no other marks. I can’t tell a physical difference. I know OE is best but they are hard to find these days and I have several old stock aftermarket piston and ring kits
Any help appreciated |

Re: G1 aftermarket piston ring Placement
Hey Mike, I've used aftermarket rings/pistons before. The one I used had directions and a little diagram of the rings. On the ring gap there was a corner nipped off/rounded off and those had to be oriented opposite from one another if I remember correctly, and aligns with a pin. But every kit is different. If there are no markings and the rings are exactly the same then it probably doesn't matter. Are the letter markings on both sides? Looks like the letters face up in the manual.
