Default Question on cleaning motor 99 TXT

If I get brave enough to disassemble my stock '99 TXT motor to clean it, can I just blast everything with Brake Cleaner? The studs look rusty and fragile, and it may not be worth it.

If I don't disassemble it, is there any value in just blasting it with Brake Cleaner?

Any insights? I don't want to destroy it taking it apart. :)

Be gentle with the stud nuts. Hit it with penetrating oil and let it soak in for a day, then try rocking the nut gently back and forth to see it it will break loose. Hold the other nut with another wrench to avoid moving the stud. If all else fails, you can remove the motor end and put a wrench on the stud head inside. Again, be gentle.

Thanks, Bob. Can I just spray it out with brake cleaner and let it dry before reassembling?

You can probably get away with it, but I'm not a big fan of it. It is very harsh on anything plastic or rubber, and probably other materials. I also believe the damage doesn't show up right away.

The mechanicals might be ok with brake cleaner, but the formvar (a type of varnish) insulation on the wires in the windings might break down with that solvent. I don't want to advise you wrong here. You could do more damage than good. The formvar is what keeps the winding wires from shorting to one another even though they are physically touching. I worked in a motor shop before and had done a good amount of electric motor rewinding in that time. One of the methods we used to unvarnish windings was to soak armatures and stators in solvent to make winding removal easier. The days of burning out windings was done away with due to the damage to the varnish between the laminations ruining them. The solvent would not seep in deep enough to do the same damage.

Compressed air. The only thing I dare use near any coils or windings.

X2 Compressed air! anything further should be left to a motor rebuilder. I have refurbished many (turned the commutator on lathe, new brushes & new bearing, that sorta job). I would not use any solvents at all, for the risk of compromising the insulation dip.
