Problem pushing an electric Precedent

A guy's cart had total brake failure today so I offered to see if I could figure out what was wrong. We needed to get his cart to my house so he pushed my cart and we used my brakes when needed. He pushed me about a half mile. The cart beeped the entire way. I wasn't sure whether to put the cart in neutral or forward while being pushed so I did both. After the push I went to drive him back to the club. My cart would barely move. When we finally got there I thought I'd try a few things to see if I could "fix" the problem. I put the cart in reverse and backed up 10 feet or so. I also cycled the run/tow switch. After that the cart now seems to be operating normally. When being pushed in what positions should the fwd/N/rev switch and the run/tow switch be placed?

I would think it should be in "tow" and "neutral" when being towed or pushed.

I would imagine pushing it off of a pickup box on ramps in neutral and the tow switch in run wouldn't harm it. But what happens when you do it for a good distance like the OP?

those tow switches are there for a reason and its not just to cut battery power...................................

OK, lets say you are on an incline and get out of the cart and it rolls down the hill. Would this harm the cart?

Most Sepex carts have roll away protection.

What's the protection? I understand pushing a cart for a long distance in the run position is bad for the motor I assume? But rolling down a hill or off truck ramps for a very short distance would this cause harm? Also, does it make a difference if the f&r is in f or neutral while the tow switch is in the run position?
