Default Solenoid swap, 6v to 12v?

I have a 73? Harley Davidson DE utility golf cart. the 6v double acting solenoid for reverse is out. My question is, I have a new 12v double acting solenoid laying around the shop here.... can I swap in the new 12v solenoid for the 6v?

motorcityreman.com 6volt/6terminal 79.99 includes shipping. I don't know much about these carts as I just purchased mine but I wouldn't take any chances. Might cause more damage

It may work fine. Typically these solenoids work reliably with a modest under voltage activation, so long as they are rated for the passing amperage.

I am in the same boat, looking for a 71461-79 6v, 6 terminal solenoid.
I called Motor City Reman and they were not able to help. Any other sources for this part? I have also tried:
Gilbert Golf Car
Vintage Golf Cart Parts
Golf Car Discounters
Buggies Unlimited
Electric Car Sales & Service
Or Co Monster Carts
Crow Sports
Advanced Electric

Thanx, Jeff

I WAS in the same boat. However, I found a 6 post 6volt solenoid at Triple Crown Golf Cars in Nicholasville, KY. They had one in stock! They also mentioned that they could order them too if needed.
My grandfather owned my '79 before I, he tried the 12 volt solenoid in replace of the 6, it did not work... Hope this helps.

Ford 9N solenoids work fine, but they ground out through the mounting brackets instead of the second terminal. Run a jumper wire between brackets and you are good to go. You can pick them up off of Amazon for $18.
