Just bought 1st golf cart
So I just bought a 88 club car for use at the race track. It has a 6 inch lift and that's about it. It has had a fe290 motor put it in. MY questions are this.. There is no air box in it, just the carb and no filter at all. I read club cars are very picky about that. The cart runs fine but is very cold natured. There is also no room for a tube to come off the carb, the is a plate there with some stuff mounted to it. I could move if I need to. It also needs exhaust replace. Do I order on for a fe 290 or the original motor that came in it. It also has been wired to idle in N which was to help it warm up faster.

Re: Just bought 1st golf cart
As far as the exhaust, order it for the FE290 motor that's in it. I'm 99% sure that the exhaust from the KF82 motor that was originally in it will not even come close to fitting.

Agreed. Use exhaust for that engine. As far as the carb and air filter layout, post if you need pics of stock hardware.

Re: Just bought 1st golf cart
I'm not exactly sure what the metal plate is, because I'm not well versed on the 80's DS's, but, I was thinking if maybe something like this might work for the carb/air tube/air box setup: http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-c...car-gas-2.html As for the which air box to use... 85 to 91, or the 92 to 96? that's another question I can't answer, but, I'd think that either would work depending if there's a different location of the choke button for them. Just a thought! |

Re: Just bought 1st golf cart
So I took exuast off and welded up the cracks but it didn't seem to make it not as Loud so I'll just have to buy one. I finally actually drove it around and I must say this thing is a turd. It does like to take off very well at all. And the part that engine bolts to that moves up and down smacks the bottom of the cart hard when I take off. Should there be a rubber bump stop there to keep it from hitting metal to metal. Another thing I noticed is that half throttle is all it has. Giving it full throttle seems to slow it a bit. Maybe the air box missing is a issue

Yep!... the rubber bumper thing is called a "snubber" and looks like this:
Most suppliers have them in stock. (click pics to enlarge) Without a snubber: Snubber1.jpg With a snubber: Snubber 3.jpg And yep!, the reason it runs like a turd is because you don't have an air box hooked up! |

Re: Just bought 1st golf cart
I would say a stock airbox for the FE290 is your best bet (1992-up). Just like the exhaust, an intake that fits the old KF82 that came in your '88 won't fit, plus they're super hard to find anyway.

Re: Just bought 1st golf cart
I forgot about the hard to find older air boxes!
A universal cone filter, or some random remote air box may, or may not work... I've never tried it! A 92 to 96 air box that straps on top of the battery would be the ticket! it requires little, to no fabrication... just a rubber strap/bungee cord to hold it place. unfortunately your limited with the battery size, anything other then a group 60 battery, the air box won't fit. 94-96airbox.jpg The 97 and up air box may require a bit more ingenuity! You'd have to relocate the battery, and there's a hole in the bottom of the air box for additional duct work, and without the duct work, or patching the hole, you may suck up water into the air box! 103.JPG |
