Default frustrating flathead

I have just rebuilt a kf-82 flathead engine and it seems to have to much compression for the starter to start it. After it finally does start and runs for while it starts ok. Do they make a compression release for this engine?

I'm not sure if there is a compression release on this motor, Did you notice one on the cam when you did the rebuild?

Have you done a compression test?
That will tell you what direction you need to head to find the cause.
Might be a weak starter/generator.

Haven't checked the compression. The camshaft didn't have any indication of a compression release on it. I am using a starter off of an older harley cart, everything looked the same except the pulley, it was larger than the original one. it slips the belt until it turns over one stroke, then it either bogs the starter or slips the belt again. I will change the pulley and try again.

THis si obviously a starter problem. We shaved the head on one of these motors to increase compression after a rebuild and the old starter worked just fine..... Find and OEM starter

That will rob the starting torque of the starter.
Also regardless of any other change, the belt should not slip.
check the belt condition and make sure it is not riding in the bottom of either pulley and it is tight.
Applied torque is from the sides of FHP belts not the bottom.
