will idle at any throttle position
hello all, i am new to this world of golf carts, just got my first one for free... any how i got the cart running after its been sitting for a few years. it would only run on half choke. it ran about 5-10 mph and i drilled out the governor on the quickness. did about 25 for a whole 3 hours and was reliable, then all of a sudden, it went down to an idle even when floored. the carb is extremely clean with no clogs or anything like that. i cleaned it with a sonic cleaner for an hour. i have tried messing with float height and the adjustment screw on the intake side, not air cleaner side. i get nothing. it will only barrely run at the moment with the choke off completely. not enough to move the carts weight on its own. ive pulled the plug numerous times and it is a little fouled. any ideas here? and also i have some pictures but no vin number so im kinda stuck as to the model. i know its a yamaha and around the 1980s.

Throttle cable yes, looks like a G1 drivetrain.

Re: will idle at any throttle position
I don't recall yamaha making them back then, but hard to say. Looks like a taylor dunn. Some places made carts like that for utility use, I'd love to have one just for the cool factor though not sure where I would put it lol. Yamaha did make a G1 yamahauler with a complete alum rear body with a dump box. There were two box sizes one width of body and one was wider but people tended to hit trees with them. You could fit like three giant coolers in the wide one they used them to serve cold drinks on the course. It was kind of overloaded with that much in it but that course had some hills in it.

Re: will idle at any throttle position
I was involved in getting the carts/equipment at that time and only recall the dealer showing us the yamahauler and we looked at a commercial truckster too but a cart based unit was better for that use. But maybe that yami dealer did not have any or something hard to say.

Re: will idle at any throttle position
throttle cable is in working condition. i was moving the actual throttle arm on the carb just to make sure. today i found a primary number but am having no luck finding info on it. j31-111248 and this cart is wild. when it was running for the three hours, it was nothing like the club cars at the golf course. it needs alot of work, checked the fuel pump and its getting fuel, i think too much? i was running it without the air filter on and fuel was spitting slighty out the rear. im puzzled.

Re: will idle at any throttle position
It will run poorly without the whole airbox on and sealed unless you rejet the carb.
Could have a few issues, one is they get plugged mufflers. Some take them off and toss in a bonfire to burn them out. Sometimes you can run them hard for a while to get them smoking and they burn out themselves. Sometimes you stick something up the tail pipe and find its plugged. Also the crank seals go out and they hardly run, usually require choke to start or run. The reeds can get bad, piston sleeves can break off in worse cases. But these are not new carts, they are one of the best carts ever built for sure and only reason they are still around. |
