Default Possible Workhorse purchase. questions

http://houma.craigslist.org/rvs/2012981583.html

We will probably go look at this cart when I get in. What do I need to look for on a gas model? I kinda know what to look for on suspension, brakes, steering, etc. The owner doesn't have the model or seriel number yet, so don't know year or engine size. What questions should I be asking him? We already own a 36v cc and want something a little different. Your input is valued. Thanks

He also says he has a brush guard and other something else? for it.

Take a compression gauge and a wrench/shocket to remove spark plug. Should have 100+ lbs compression.

I would make sure that comp. is 140 to 155. An engine with 100 to 125 lbs. of comp. is gonna need a rebuild soon.

Agreed a workhorse will have a 4 stroke motor compression should fall between 145 and 165 to be healthy otherwise you are looking at rebuilding a discontinued motor... not a good buy. Some had hour meters on them. Look at the air cleaner and the oil.... they will give some indication of the care it has gotten...?

Scotty knows what he's talkin bout so let us know what you find. Somebody that's honest and sure about the cart their sellin' will surely let you check comp.... Just b/c it will run and move does not mean the comp. values are up to par. Low comp. values will rob the engine of what little hp it has. Good Luck.

Discontinued motor? I'm sure glad I asked ya'll opinion. That kinda changes the horse's color.

The Ezgo dealer says the MCI motors (2003&up) can be exchanged with a rebuild-able core as long as the supply lasts...

Just FYI, parts and rebuild kits are still available for these engines. They are great engines and hard to break along with the use of common sense. There are also some engine alternatives so if the money gets right it may be worth it.

the 2 pg and 3 pg were discountinued over 20 years ago, and pretty much most parts are still available for them and there are 1000's still running I'm sure. Including mine. I would think parts will be available for the subaru engine for years to come, There's still 1000's of those out there running also.

Finally got some #'s from the seller. ST Sport. A1-03. Do these #'s tell ya'll anything? (gas, built in 2003?) I just spoke to the guy, and with the approaching holidays, he is real anxious to sell. I am 200 miles out in the Gulf Of Mexico and won't be able to check it out till the 14th. I may be able to send my wife and a friend to go check it. If anybody has details on that model I would sure appreciate the infjormation. In the meantime I will keep looking. Thanks
