83 Marathon 2PG Engine Hoist
Hi All,
OK, I need to pull my engine and rebuild/repair my clutches and I should be good to go. It's clear that the engine needs to come out from the top, but it will need to shift forward before it will clear the body. I have read online that there is an adapter to be used when pulling the engine, but I can't find an example of one so that I can make up something that will work. I have a hydraulic engine hoist in the shop, but I need a good way to hook up to the engine to lift it out. Does anyone have a drawing or picture of one that I could use as a go-by? I figured that asking here is better than winging it on my own and screwing something (me) up through trial and, my old friend, "Error"! Thanks for the help, Chuck |

With the clutch that 2PG engine weighs in at around 50lbs, pull the cables, fuel lines, unplug the wires to the engine, roll the belt off, drop the exhaust, unbolt it and lift it out by hand - that's the fastest, easiest way

I left the belt on the drive clutch to use as a handle. Grab the front, and lift it right out.

I remove the starter with cables attached place it over the front by the f/r shiftier. Then insert a piece of 1/2" rod in the starter bracket holes and now you have a handle.

Re: 83 Marathon 2PG Engine Hoist
Thanks guys,
Knowing the approximate weight is a big help, I would have thought it would have been heavier. With it only being about 50#, the idea of 1/2" all-thread with nuts on either end as stops seems to be a good idea. I can weld a short piece of chain to the middle of the all-thread for attachment to the hydraulic engine lift. This should keep it from shifting while suspended and make it easier to handle. If I go this way I'll send pictures of what I do so that you can see. While it only weighs 50#, I'm 65 years. I think that leaning over and putting that strain on my back is not a great idea for me. Once I get it up on the bench, shifting it around will be no problem. Again, Thanks for all the help! Chuck |

Re: 83 Marathon 2PG Engine Hoist
Hey all,
Thought I should upload a picture of the engine hoist I threw together for those who come to this thread looking for an idea. Below is what I slapped together. 1' of 1/2" all thread (trim length to fit), nuts, washers and 2' of 3/8" chain. Install through the starter/generator mounting bracket holes. With it I can offset the chain as needed to clear the body for removal/install or set it for balance in the center of the motor. If you don't want to bench press the engine in and out, this works pretty well. Hope this helps. Chuck |

Also, without the chain it makes a good handle for the top of the motor as well.
