Default Re: Just bought a Melex 666, question about voltage

Mooncarter, I will take your advice and try testing the motor before buying anything.

But my original question is still unanswered, at least in my mind. Maybe if I rephrase it in a different way.

If I have a 36 volt controller (and a 36 volt battery charger) and let's say the original battery complement was 6-6 volt batteries for a total of 36 volts, will the GE motor rated at 48 volts operate?

Just maybe not as fast or efficient as if it were supplied at 48 volts.??

Thanks again,

Mark

( I warned you I would have stupid questions!)

"Without confusing things for this fellow, let's just say if it came from the factory running 36v it had a 36v motor in it. If it came from the factory running at 48v, it had a 48v motor in it. I am quite sure they did not run a 48v motor at 36v."

But is it possible?
Thanks,

Not a stupid question. The short answer is no you cannot run a 48v motor at 36v.

While technically it will run, my understanding is it will not run for long. Without going into all the reasons and explaining why, and the difference in series and sepex motors, amp. draw, how the voltage difference may affect the controller and other components etc. I would look at it this way for now: While the motor in your car will actually start and run with no oil in it, it will not run for long.

And at the risk of confusing things even more, a 36v motor will run at 48v. But, that's another story.

Uh. Why can’t you run a 48 volt motor at 36? A 48 volt cart at half throttle is only sending 24 volts to the motor. It will run at 36 but it won’t be as efficient as 48. It would not shock me at all if they put a 48 in a 36 cart. It was parts that they had.

wow, i have only worked on one Melex, What a great project car, and yes you have stirred up a whole bunch of fun... Mooncarter is right about your motor, check it out, I have seen people spend thousands of dollars on 'Bing" only to have to spend more to get the cart moving, Motor, Controller, Batteries than charger.

If you want to know the "why" there are several threads in here about it.

I'm simply helping our new member. I thought it would be unnecessary and confusing to go into the science behind the reasons for not doing this.

Having said that, Dave, Scotty, and JohnnieB have outlined the reasons and have explained it better than I can. I stand by my suggestion to the OP to not do it. That's all.

Mooncarter,

This test? I couldn't find the sticky, but found this out on the interweb.

Success. The motor turns.

Next issue. Assuming that I need to change the controller, get 6 8 volt batteries and a charger..

How do I tell if the solenoid is capable?

I know I'm a PITA. I appreciate all your help.

Mark
