Default Wiring/solenoid question

Hey guys I was given a few Club Cars, all are missing parts, but I've got one together enough that I'm just waiting on a starter solenoid now. Does the solenoid stay engaged while the engine is running, or just at start up? The cart in question a 97 DS.

thanks. I'm not sure just how the wiring works, and was wondering if I could "jumpstart" it while I wait for my solenoid.

Depending on your level of knowledge and expertise, you could put a 12 volt 2 pin lawn mower solenoid on it to test run, BUT that is NOT the CONTINUOUS RUN solenoid that you need and would be just for TEST ONLY. ( if you have one laying around )

Well I got it started, but it stalls in forward. It goes reverse, just not forward. Off to do some more reading.

So, listen to this... it was in maintenance mode and I didn't know it. When I tried to put it in drive or reverse, it would kill the engine.

so are you sure the solenoid is bad?
Have you tested it?
To keep it simple, take the two small wires off of the small solenoid posts and connect one to battery ground and one to battery positive to each post.

When I got the cart, the starter and solenoid were both missing, and the motor was locked up. I swapped out the motor, bought a new starter/generator, and now I'm waiting for the solenoid to show up.
