Default Cylinder Head Temp Gauge

Does anyone know a reasonably price CHT gauge with a spark plug sender? I believe keeping track of the head temp on a speed modified golf cart engine is an added safety factor to prevent overheating.

I looked hard into that a while back. Those thermo couplers are not cheap. I ended up just using the "liquid" sending unit that came with the gauge pack and mounted it in the fins on one of the heads. It is slow in response, but it does work. Check out some of the ultralight sites, they are big into that stuff........

Hey flint, what kind of temps do you see with yours?
Are you using a sending unit for water temps?
Do you think it is better to watch the cylinder head temp or oil temp? Would the oil temp tell you the same thing? I want this for my cart as I am a firm believer on watching gauges as dum dum lights suck.

Are you using a sending unit for water temps? Yes, came with the guage.

Do you think it is better to watch the cylinder head temp or oil temp? I am watching oil pressure, and still have the low pressure cut off. The best way for CHT is with a thermocouple on the spark plug hole, but you can spend $150 for that set up pretty quick. I your life depends on it as in an ultra light that's cheap, a little too pricey for me though.

Oil temp would probably be more accurate as a warning than what I am using for CHT, but then again it's mostly for show. My guage would be too slow in a catastrophic failure, but I still have the cut off for that.

Just A wild a$$ guess, but I think anything over 250 degrees would start being a problem...

Standard CHT guages go up to 340 degrees, mine is right by the header and usually stays around 220.
