Default Clutch does not engage drive belt on Yamaha G1

I am new to this forum and did as much searching as I possibly could to see if anyone else had this same problem but I couldn't find anything as of yet. I am trying to repair an old G1 for my father-in-law and the problem I am having is with the clutch, I hope!

When I step on the gas, the engine runs and spins the clutch, but the clutch isn't creating the force it needs to clamp onto the belt to drive the cart, it just spins forever and nothing happens. I took the outer clutch off to check the spring and to see if there was any gunk inside the parts and everything came out clean. Just wondering what I might have to do in order to get this bad boy up and running again! I will post some pics once we get it going!!

Thanks for any and all !

Welcome to the forum. Are talking about the front or rear clutch. It may just need cleaning/greasing.

Welcome!

Make sure the engine is running and not just spinning with the starter.

I think it's the front clutch(the one with the 4 weights in it). the engine sounds like its running, but since we haven't had it going in well over a year, I'm not sure what it would sounds like when its running vs. just spinning with the starter. If it is just spinning with the starter, maybe there are some tips you guys might be able to give me on getting it going. Thanks again!!

If it revs up then it's running if it just turns over and doesn't change RPM it's usually just the starter turning.

If its' been sitting,Pull the carb and clean it,The wonderful gas they sell us has a 2-3month shelf-life.Thats the most common issue the past 2-years with everything that uses gas.Hope this helps.

Yeah sounds to me like it's not running, but just spinning trying to start.

Check the fuel pump also, there is a "sticky" about that up top.

Check spark plug.

New gas.

Thanks guys for all the advice. After some digging today, found that there was no gas running from the fuel tank into any of the lines. Pulled the carb and I'm goin to clean that this week. The fuel pump looks like it might be tough to get out, but I will put in my best effort. I will check out the "sticky" thread to see what I can find! Thanks Again!!!
