Default Quick battery question

What size/type of battery do you all use and or reccomend for a g22 gas cart? I have had battery issues with the standard 650cca car batteries from Walmart. Thanks in advance

Ice, I put the largest and best battery that would fit in my G8. A G22 only has room for a smaller batt. But get a better quality battery of the same size. I bought a top of the line Auto Zone battery.

Are you sure you don't have charging issues?

Mike Mac...not sure about the charging problem. Starter is charging when I use the voltometer test. Something is draining the battery if yhe cart sits more than about 6-7 days. Whole cart has been re-wired and checked for shorts and voltage draws. Batgery tested low charge but still good. I can't figure this one out?

Does it have a radio with channel memory, or a clock that works all the time,(parrisitic draw on current)? If so that might be your problem.

Take the car to a semi dark area, remove the negative battery cable at the battery, then watch very closely, for a small spark when you touch the nagative batt cable end, back to the battery neg post. If it sparks, you have a short, or likt I said, somethong like a radio drewing current.

To check for draws,Unhook the Negative-Cable.Connect a test lite to the cable, and touch the probe of the tester to the Negative-Post.If it lites up,you have a draw. The brighter the lite, the larger the draw. Then start unhooking items 1 at a time to see what is drawing. If the battery has a bad-cell,it will kill the rest of them,The worse the cell-condition,the faster it dies.I use Group-34 Batteries in our carts.Interstate and others sell "Blems" for under $40.Advance-Auto sells "Used" which are new-returns(bought and found out it needed an alternator,so they return the battery). They are also under $40.These places can also test your battery for you for Free!Hope this helps.

Thanks guys! I do have a radio that has pre-set memory. No lights or clock is on the radio when it is off though but it does hold the clock and channel memory. I will do the negative battery terminal tests that you both mentioned and see if I am getting a draw with and without the radio hooked up.
I will post up my results when I do the test.
Thanks again!

Yamaha recommends a Group-24 type battery in all gas carts all the way back to G-1s. i never put "wet" batteries in my gas vehicles of any type (i use SLA or AGM type). any battery over 550cca will satisfy Yamaha specs. If you have rewired the cart using the frame as a ground, be ready for trouble.

cgtech,
It's a type 24 battery from Wally World. What are the benefits of a SLA or AGM battery? Do they last longer or drain at a slower rate?

I live in Chandler, Az. The guy that re-wired the cart used to work for A! golf carts in Chandler before he became ill and couldn't work full time anymore. He said he grounded back to the battery because he knew that you couldn't ground to the frame of a Yamaha. So I think we are ok there.

I did the negative terminal with a test light test and with the radio hooked up the light came on. With the radio disconnected, the light went off. Could a radio memory really drain a battery in a week? Would a "non-wet" battery be better?

Thanks

I would say that is a good thing!! (I just bought a G22 from them in may. Was impresed with their bus.!)

Your next test should be, take the "charged" battery to Auto Zone/Checker Auto, and have it load tested. Mine is 800 plus CCA, same batt that is in my diesel. So I have a back up batt. for any of my cars that might need one in a pinch!

Just a plain ole battery in my opinion, but a good one. Had optima's in the past, not impressed with them in AZ. heat tho.!

Tech, and Ice, all 3 of us in AZ!? Gee, we got a clan!! Thought everybody here had side by side's!

Need ta talk to you guys! Have you guys ridden in east valley? Supposed ta be ghost towns/mineing camps etc. going that direction!!?? Or just neat areas to ride in!?
