Default 1983 EZGO textron Robin Engine 244CC 2 stroking Pulsar timing issue

I have a 1983 EZGO textron with a 244cc Robing 2 stroke engine. I can not seem to get it to run correctly. I have cleaned and inspected the carb. Took off the muffler and placed it on a BBQ. Tried to run it with the muffler off. I pulled off the engine oil mixer(not sure what it is called) and now mix my gas.

This cart has a chevy coil and HEI. It gets plenty of spark.

The cart starts without any issue. Whenever I give it full throttle, I have no power and it backfires. It does this in forward and sometimes in reverse. I have more power in reverse.

So that is information about my cart and the symptoms I am seeing. I would like to find the timing information for the pulsar to see if the timing is off. I have a good idea what needs to be done to actually time the cart, I just do not know where I would need to adjustt the pulsar. I see the timing marks on the flywheel that state f and r. I see the timing mark on the engine. Where should I try to align the pulsar with the 2 nipples on the flywheel?

I tried to find a service manual for this cart but I was unable to locate one. Does anyone know what year range I could look for?

Also, if I missed any information or my post is not clear. I will be more than willing to try and explain anything in a different way. Thank you very much for your time and assistance.

I have found a manual for the 85 EZGO posted in another thread. I ran the PDf through the OCR and it is now searchable by keyword. I hope this helps someone else. I have not had a chance to check the timing. I am not that great at understanding what the wording the service manual means. I am going to see if my father will be able to help me. He is an old shade tree mechanic.

Here is the searchable PDF drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B5W_eb2gL9LYbzlBUkVFNk90UVk&usp=sha ring

It would not let me upload it to this site via attachment or add a hyperlink.

Just in case, can anyone simplify this from page l-15?

I. Ignition Timing (Standard)

(See Fig. L-14)
Forward: 180
(B.T.D.C.)
+ 30 /1,500 R.P.M.
Reverse: 21 0
(B.T.D.C.)
+ 0 3 / 1,500 R.P .M.
Reassembly procedures for the pulser
assembly:
Fasten the pulser mounting plate with
the center of the screws in alignment
with the timing mark line at the plate.
11. Ignition Timing Check
(Forward rotation only)
Due to the function of the 5.5.1.
system, the timing checks may be made
only when engine is running.
NOTE: If the ignition timing in the
forward rotation is correct, the timing
in reverse rotation will also be correct.
Therefore, timing checks are only
required in the forward rotation.
L-15
I. Remove the dust plate from the
cooling fan shroud.
2. Set the engine R.P .M. at 1,500
R.P.M. ~ 200 in forward rotation.
3. Illuminate the slit line on the
cooling fan shroud using a timing
light and check if the slit line and
the embossed mark on the cooling
fan (Fig. L-14) are in alignment •
4. The timing is correct when the
marks are in alignment. (Fig. L-IS)

III. Ignition Timing Adjustment

(Forward Rotation)
If the ignition timing is incorrect,
adjust it in accordance with the
following procedures.
I. Remove the cooling fan shroud and
cooling fan, and loosen the plate
mounting screws.
2. Adjust the timing by rotating the
plate - left or right. (Fasten screws
to 52 lb. in.) (See Fig. L-16)
3. Check the timing in accordance
with the ignition timing check I and
2.

Well, I think I blew the engine. I heard a pop and now the engine will not turn over. The starter moved the belt but I get no response from the engine.

Does anyone know of a place that rebuilds or sells rebuilt robin 244cc engines?

You are better off diving in, and rebuilding it yourself. Many people here can walk you through the process.

Well, the engine is actually fine. I am a moron. The Pulsar is broken and that was what was rattling. I must have damaged it somehow. Now I need to replace the pulsar. I did get a compression test done. I have 110 PSI both forward and reverse.

Does anyone have a source for pulsars. A quick search looks like $110 for the pulsar. Does anyone know if I can cross reference it at a napa or another parts store?

I've been thinking about pulsars for a while. About 2 weeks ago somebody mentioned making one work from a John Deere tractor. A pulsar is really just a magnetic pickup. If you could make one fit, it would work. I found a bunch on Mercury boat motors that look close.

This web page has all kinds of good information. http://gardentractorpullingtips.com/ignition.htm

Just an FYI, these 2PG's are very tolerant of the pulsar location in regards to timing - and generally You'll always get more power in reverse as the timing is slightly advanced when the engine runs backwards (although if You try and advance it in forward, by the time You see any improvement You'll likely lose all running in reverse) ...

A factory Pulsar should be under $100 shipped - try Ebay, they're up there now for $95 but if You watch the sponsors and use the promo codes, etc You'll prob be able to do even slightly better.

Thank you very much for the info. I found one online for $85 shipped. It baffles me I can get a complete distributor for a Chevy for close to the same price.

As far as timing goes, do you have any other ideas on why my cart is so slow. I seem to have resolved the backfiring issue before the pulsar broke. I can only get it up to 3-4 MPH. There is no governor on this cart. I have taken the carb completly apart and cleaned it. BBq the muffler(even ran without it). Both clutches seem to be working just fine. Whenever I go down heal, it feels like the engine skips a beat and slows down.
