It is hard to tell with the way the oil is pooled on top of the nut, can’t really see the threads. But it looks like there’s more threads showing on the intake valves than the exhaust valves which would be a sign the intake valves are sunk into the head and need to be replaced. But a better pic without the oil hiding the threads would be easier to be certain

It would also be helpful to know what results a wet compression test yields if you check it again with a little oil down the spark plug hole. But if what I think I see in your pictures is correct it’s probably worn intake valves.

Thanks guys. I’ll give the wet compression test a shot. Also never tore one of these apart can you get away with lapping in new valves or do seats need to be cut.

New valves and lap them in and it’ll be fine. These engines were known for soft intake valves and it’s a pretty common issue

You did make sure your throttle was held wide open when you tested the compression ? Just checking because it will make a difference if you didn't.

From what I can see, the images do not really show any excessive valve wear, so we will wait for the results of a wet compression test. As Trig mentioned, make sure the carb is wide open.

It’s hard to tell with the oil settled on the threads, some of the images look fine. Some of them look like the intake is worn. I’m undecided lol

Agreed still want to see results of wet test. I suspect worn rings based on the compression and symptoms clearing up as the engine warms up but picture without oil and wet test should tell us everything we need to know.

I also have seen (only once) a slightly blown head gasket that behaved similarly to what he describes. But I’m pretty sure that’s not the norm.

I’ll try to get a wet test in the morning and I’ll double check I’m pretty sure I had it wide open. I’ll let you know

I am thinking rings too. There are a few clues lol. Wet test will prove either way. If this engine is all original and untouched, I am surprised that the valve lash adjusters are not showing a lot more thread. We shall see!
