1988 Club Car DS Engine
Hey All -
First time poster here. I have a gas powered 1988 Club Car DS with an engine that just blew out. Anyone on this fine forum have an idea of where I could find a replacement? |

Welcome to the "ward" Would help if you posted your location so members here can point you in the right direction. What happened to your motor, is it worth rebuilding and/or do you want/need more power?

Thanks Dundee. I am in Charleston SC... the cart is 100% original, the mechanic said the engine is completely shot and needs a total replacement. Feel like this is a shot in the dark so any guidance is appreciated! |

SC?? The view from here is that there is so many carts [and parts] laying around and/or for sale that a decent motor might even fall out of a tree at the edge of your property! I'm sure some local members where you are will surely come up with a solution.

Re: 1988 Club Car DS Engine
Thanks All! I will reach out to that guy in SA.
Question, I have been told that only a 1988 CC engine will work... I dont know anything about this stuff, can anyone here confirm? Seems a bit odd that it has to be an engine from that specific year... |

Re: 1988 Club Car DS Engine
Your cart's motor is known as a KF82 flathead motor. The KF82 motor was used in Club Car gas golf carts from 1984-1991. You do not need only a 1988 motor (?), you can use any KF82 motor from any of those model years for a direct replacement.

You might as well go in deep and get a big block or clone motor. That's what I would do if I needed a engine.

Re: 1988 Club Car DS Engine
And that FE290 that someone mentioned earlier will likely not work (easily). If it's a '97 then it has a clockwise-spinning motor. Your '88 (and all the KF82 carts from 1984-1991) ran counter-clockwise motors. Also the engine cradle and linkages are all different, so it becomes a pain to try and retrofit an FE290 motor into a KF82 cart. If you're willing to do all that, you might as well just do a big block swap or something.
