Default Busted Piston Skirt on 87 Marathon

2pg engine stopped as if out of gas. Have checked most problems for the cause and finally got down to the piston skirt is busted. Before buying new piston wanted some advice on what would cause this to happen. Don't want to fix halfway while I am in there but need to save what money I can. Would new piston only or a full top end kit be recommended. Read a post on here from 2009 and he did top end but also needed 3 other bearings. What would those bearings possible be? Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Three bearings would be crankshaft bearings. If the engine is coming out to replace the piston, and rings, you may as well change the crankshaft bearings, and seals too. It's almost guaranteed that crap from a broken piston is getting into the bearings.

Yes he was regarding crank bearings. You can also do a check after you remove the jug and piston by grabbing the rod and move it side to side parrellel to the crank to see if you have allot of play. A little is ok but if it seems sloppy you may as well do a long block rebiuld and get crank, bearing, seals, piston and new jug. You then would be all set with a basic new engine. Not cheap but less than a 3pg is. If you have a piston as bad as you state you would probably have to go over on piston and bore out the jug or get a new piston and jug set anyway.
