Is not as much the current carrying capacity as it is the type of material used for the contacts.

AC voltage crosses the 0v mark 120 times a second, so there is little to no spark when disconnecting.

DC voltage on the other hand causes a spark that can pit and wear out the contacts pretty fast if the switch is not designed for it.

On AC/DC switches there is usually a big derating between AC vs DC capacity for the same switch, like DC is 1/5 of AC capacity.

If You don't have anything else connected to the key switch, it may be OK. The only real load would be the solenoid, as the controller is likely logic voltage and would have negligible current drain.

Hopefully when you get the switch it will have a DC rating printed on it.

appears the key can be removed from both positions so I'll have to decide on that as well.
Back before they had steering wheel locks that's how gasoline cars worked.

Funny how everyone seems to forget that golf car key switches are somewhat weather-resistant!
(I learned the hard way with an aftermarket headlight switch, and washing my cart frequently!)

Keep your stock key switch handy Lnl!

The only thing I've added to the key switch is the 48v reducer that I got from Carts Unlimited (4-wire). I also have a fuse block with individual switches for all 12v accessories (lights, led's, horn, acc plug/cig lighter).

I guess my main concern is to not damage anything beyond the key switch.

Sergio, as I stated I know little, after reading and re-reading your post several times I think I get the gist of it, so thank you for the explanation!

Thanks lockman! Being this is for my folks, it will rarely, if ever be driven in inclement weather or off-road and always garaged but still something to always be aware of!

Thanks, everyone!

Sorry for the barge in...but all you are talking abut 4 wire key set up. i just received a (uncommon key) from Golf Cart Kings and its a 2 prong. Is this the correct one? Are gassers different? I am a 89 CC DS.

thanks

Electrics are 2 wire, pedal start gas carts are 4 wire, and key start gas carts are 5 wire!

Well, needing to order a kick plate anyway, I too went to Golf Cart King and ordered a key switch.

Better safe than sorry!

I installed a Barrel style Key Switch back in 2008 and it works flawlessly. Key pulls out only on Lock, stays in on Ign position.
