Cart won't move....
Hi eveyone, my golf cart just stopped running the other day. I have had it about a month and its a 2012 ezgo rxv, gas. When I hit the pedal the solenoid just clicks rapidly. I bench tested the solenoid and its good. So I disconnected the wire from the starter generator that comes from the solenoid (the 12v wire) and i tested the voltage while I hit the pedal. I got one good click from the solenoid and a steady 12.4v from the wire. Would this mean my starter generator is fried or something??? Also, sometimes when i hit the gas, before it stopped moving all together, the cart would just whine at me like it was flooded or something, then I would pump the gas and it would eventually go, it does does backfire pretty much every time i take it out. does anyone know how to correct this issue, maybe carb adjustment or something. Could this problem maybe have caused the starter generator to go bad... This is my first cart, and Im trying to learn everything I need to know about it. Any advice will be appreciated
Thanks, Ryan |

Re: Cart won't move....
The first thing I would do is take the battery and have it load tested at a parts store. Sounds like it has the volts but has no amps to start it.

Re: Cart won't move....
Chattering solenoid usually is low current/voltage so possibly bad battery. Backfiring can be caused by the carb throttle plate not closing all the way and allowing fuel to get in with no spark. That gets to a hot muffler and boom..

Re: Cart won't move....
so I took the battery in and they said it was definitely low. so they charged it up and I put it in the cart and it started right up. so I drove it around a while then got back and stopped it and started it a couple times and it failed to move a couple of times I hit the pedal and I had to pump it. I'm going to try adjusting the throttle plate so it sits back further if possible.thank you guys so much for the help, definitely save me $300 because I was about to buy a new starter / generator. if it does end up being the battery, what would you guys recommend me putting in it to replace it? I have put a light kit, cigarette lighter and auxiliary hook up and a stereo with two speakers In it so maybe I need to up the battery if possible. There's no markings on the battery that is in it right now so I don't really have anything to go off of.what type of cold cranking amps and reserved do I want to shoot for?
Thanks again, Ryan |

Re: Cart won't move....
Typically any group 24 auto battery will work. If you have the stereo etc then you may want to consider going with one of the optima gel cells. I would look through this manual:
http://products.jacobsen.com/img/manuals/605586.pdf Yes it is not for the rxv, but you can look in there for the test procedures for generator and see if it, or the voltage regulator is bad. If you are running the cart, it should not be pulling the battery down. My bet with a known good battery is a bad voltage regulator. |

Re: Cart won't move....
Sooo the battery seems to be doing well, and I took off the carb and cleaned it out. While I had it apart, I discovered the throttle plate set screw was not backed out enough to aliow the throttle plate to close all the way. So i got it all back together and on the cart and drove it for a while with no backfires or staling! Then.. a backfire!!! i took the seat off to see if the plate was closed all the way and it was stuck back in the same position it was previously stopping at when the set screw was stopping it. So I manually had to give the throttle a push to close it, then it would close all the way again for a while then like 30min of driving and it would get stuck at that same point again. Now I know the set screw is set right at the point where the plate closes all the way beacuse I set it while I had the carb off. It looks like its getting stuck back where the governor plate pivots. I tried praying it with wd40 and that apparently didnt work. Anyone know if this can be taken off and clened out. It looks like it pivots on a little square thats attached to the differential. Heres a picture on page A-2. http://www.eastcoastcarts.com/media/...rts_manual.pdf

Re: Cart won't move....
I believe recently there was mention of the throttle return spring on that model being light weight. Is it possible for you to use a heavier spring to return it closed? It is possible that the governor needs to be loosened a bit to give enough play in the throttle.

Re: Cart won't move....
I'm assuming the throttle return spring is the spring connected to the throttle on the carburetor... It's closed pretty forcefully when I had the carb off and was cleaning it out. What's strange is after I push it closed manually, it will open and close fine for approximately 40 pushes or so on the gas then it's will start to stop just short of closing all the way again!?
