Default Electricial problem

Ok Ladies and Gents, Give an old guy few suggestions. Yesterday started up old trusty 2000 G-16 to move it to get to mower .Pulled mower out left cart out while cutting grass. Cart started fine ,drove it around back 40 a bit and shut it off. long story short when I went to put it up I turned on big overhead fan mounted to roof and noticed it was running slow. Turned off fan and tried to start and backup alarm sounded really low. When I pressed pedal to start alarm stopped all together. Towed it to shop thinking brand new battery dead and noticed not only big over head fan not working at all, but front turn signals, Stereo in glove box, rear ran,[small] over rear seat. Rear turn and stop lights work ,headlights work also. Cart has never given me problems over years till now. Sure its electrical problem but where does one start to try to find problem such as this.I,d like to give it a try before taking it to shop for rewiring or something. As stated its 2000, G-16 ,gas job.Paul

If it was me, I would begin by fully charging the "brand new" battery, then see what it does and go from there. Don't turn on your overhead fan, or anything else, until the cart is moving!! Could be a voltage regulator problem. - Ray

Thanks for response ,I have turned on fan several times with cart not moving didn't know it would hurt. Would that regulator cause the problems that I spoke of such as turn signals only half working and such? Not a mechanic by any means, what kind of job is this regulator to replace? Oh by the way battery is fully charged according to Nappa,.It been in there and run several weeks now. Thanks,Paul

Are you saying that the battery was fully charged and confirmed ok a couple weeks ago? If you are, after 2 weeks of use, if not being properly charged, that battery could be pretty flat. If you have a voltmeter, you could check the terminal voltage of the battery (fully charged it should be in the neighborhood of 12.6 to 12.7 volts) (Near dead 11.5 to 11.6 v. ) Another way to test your battery would be with a hydrometer. The cheapie with floating balls should work ok. Fully charged all balls would be floating. Dead would have no balls floating. You need to determine the status of the battery (dead or not) before continuing (battery is new, so we know it should be good). A voltmeter will be required later on if you need to test the regulator, first you must determine that the battery is fully charged. Good luck, let us know what you find. - Ray

Well little update on electrical problem, My 82 year old butt got out in my shop[97 here now in Ga.Jumped on cart and fired right up! So lifted hood and noticed positive battery cable clamp cracked I recon where guys from Napa installed new battery few weeks back. At any rate I installed 2 new cable clamps and been working fine since. Next time I,ll put on 2 pair of glasses to check things. My wife says i,m getting old, I believe it now. Thanks for responses and I still like to know why I shouldn't turn radio on without engine running just to learn something new. Thanks,Paul

I can't see any reason you can't listen to the radio without running the engine, I think Bigstik was just advising against it while diagnosing your problems,
I would recommend not running your radio to long and draining your battery to far down, in a cart or any vehicle for that matter it puts a lot of strain on a charging system trying to charge a dead battery.

Sorry for the late response as I was away for a while. The reason I recommended not turning on any accessories was that when you already have what appears to be a weak/discharged battery problem, turning on any accessories would just put additional load on the battery and add to the problem. Your voltage measurement did show that the battery was indeed fully charged. Your next step to check connections was good and fortunately uncovered the problem. I agree with jeff70 that modest use of the battery without running would be ok, just don't overdo it, as failure to turn over would result. Glad to see you got it sorted out . Ray.
