Squealing Drive belt

Have a squeal/squeaking in or around my drive belt. Replaced the belt, but that seams to have made it slightly worse. Any ideas for troubleshooting this issue. Yamaha G22 gas.

I dont know your type of cart at all but can tell you that, most times, the squealing you hear from a belt is due to the belt slipping on the pulleys, normally when first starting. Once the cart gets going the belt is no longer slipping and the squeal is no longer there. Again, without knowing your cart, do you have two belts? One for the starter and the other for the drive? If so, its the starter belts that normally squeal. There should be an adjustment bracket there somewhere to tighten things up. Again, without knowing G22s at all I could be off base. Just trying to throw some info your way.

Just took the drive belt off and ran it without. No squeek. Cleaned and applied belt dressing to the pulleys and put belt back on. Still squeeks. Squeek at different points during acceleration. Even at high throttle. There is two belts but the generator belt did snot squeal when drive belt was off.

Clutches could be worn, have you checked them?

The belt wears the clutch sheaves, usually from the dust and dirt flying around under the cart gets in the belt. This takes many years but eventually wears into the sheaves (sheave is one side of a pulley for a belt) and puts grooves in them from the belt. Since the CVT moves the sheaves to change gearing it will wear more the most usual place the belt is while running it. It messes up how the clutch works and shifts because the groove makes the cvt think the belt is in a different place, or a different width. Eventually it wears holes through the alum sheaves.

You could also have an issue with the clutch either the rollers or weights in the primary (on engine) are broken and the clutch has lost its ability to grab the belt hard enough. Usually it will not shift well then and cart goes real slow. Could have problem with the spring in the secondary also, that is what keeps tension on the belt. You could have a new belt, they are sticky and will make noise and drag for a little bit until they break in.

You can also clean the belt with brake cleaner spray, or a good detergent like dish soap and let dry. Then get some very fine sandpaper and just scratch up the sheaves on belt surfaces so they are not shiny. Do not sand into them, just remove the glaze so they do not shine. Sand from the outside to the center direction. That will make the belt grab better. Basically you can wipe the sheaves with sandpaper and that is enough.

You do not want to see the moving sheaves wobble or be loose. They are just bushings in there so they do have a little play, but not a lot. That is the outer section of the primary and inner side of the secondary on a yamaha. Most you can grease with a fitting, only use 1-2 pumps and make sure none comes out inside at the bushing, you do not want grease on your belt it is a mess to clean up.

Also check the ramps on the back of the secondary, that is where it shifts. They can not be all torn up.
