Painting aluminum roof supports
We are changing most everything about our 92ds. One of the issues we need to address is the white roof and aluminum supports. I’ve learned that the roof is pretty much a replace only deal because paint just won’t look right. But what about the supports? Anyone have any luck painting them and the paint holding up??

Re: Painting aluminum roof supports
Actually some folks on here have painted their tops with good success. I have not messed with mine yet. I built my 92 DS for hunting, so I'm not planning on putting the top on. Would just get hung up on tree limbs and such.
There are threads on here where folks describe how they painted the top. If I can find a couple, I'll post the link. As for painting the supports, I have not done that yet either. However, I did paint most of the frame. I just cleaned it real good, degreased, scuffed, sprayed on aluminum primer and then painted. Seems to be holding up good for me. Are you planning on painting the body and possibly the top? |

Here is one thread talking about painting the roof: http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/body-...ight=paint+top
There are other threads. Prep is the key with any painting, but especially for plastic. In addition to adhesion promoter. |

Re: Painting aluminum roof supports
We ordered a Spartan body, hopefully that comes soon. I will do some more searching, but most of what I’ve found tells me to stay away. I’m not much for painting things..

Re: Painting aluminum roof supports
I just cleaned my windshield supports with denatured alcohol and sprayed them. No issues at all.
As for the top, I painted the top on my carryall about a year ago when I built the cart. Only had one instance where the kids ran into a tree and chipped the corner a little bit, otherwise zero issues with the top peeling or flaking. And I used satin black so it is easy to touch up should the need arise, it just hasn't arisen :) Not the best picture but its hot outside and I dont feel like walking all the way out to the shop lol |

Re: Painting aluminum roof supports
Main thing with painting any aluminum is adhesion. Since you are likely going to use a spray can you may want to read some labels on the "all surface" or "primer and paint" type products to see if it is recommended for alum. Personally I'd scuff it with a scotch-brite pad and go for it. Also etching is a good idea. Even vinegar may slightly pit the aluminum to assist in adhesion.
This is .02. YMMV....Al |
