Default starter charger question

i have a 1983 ezgo ( the lemon year) the starter alternator braket is broken in the back and a new one is 400-500 new. i was wondering, would a couple of self tappers and stock steel work? or if i take out the guts would it be worth having it welded back into place? was told if i bought a new one that it it would be very wise to reinforce it in any way possible, as well as the motor frame now. good idea or does it drop the value if i find a buyer with the right price..... leave it then? just let them deal with it or do it even though this will be seeing a lot of street action from me....
