Default Cleaning Carbon build-up off heads

Still working on my rebuild, slowly but surely. What's the best way to clean the carbon build up off the bottom of the head without damaging it? I've tried spray cleaner/degreaser, carb cleaner, and brake cleaner with a stiff nylon bristle brush with little to no effect. I've got a wire brush wheel for a drill but I am assuming that's a no-no on an aluminum head.

I use pieces of wood cut to resemble a wedge like you would split wood with. Old broom handles work great! It's hard enough to scrape off carbon, but won't scratch the aluminum.

Thanks for the tip. I read somewhere that methanol based paint stripper would work and not damage aluminum. Anybody tried this?

A wire brush on a drill is fine, just let it do the work, without pushing and no damage will be done.Razor blades work great on valves and pistons.Hope this helps.

I'm replacing pistons and valves. Mainly just need to clean the bottom surface of the head and exhaust ports.
