Default Proper valve lap

Anyone know minimum width of the lap on the valve face when hand lapping? The old valves were worn pretty badly and I wasn't sure how far to go with the new ones.

Default Re: Proper valve lap

Others may differ, but I shoot for about 1/16" of seat width, centered on face, with a margin of at least 1/16". Check contact area with a little Dykem (or magic marker). After grind, ink face, place valve in head and rotate a turn or two. I have a habit of slapping the valve shut a few times (by hand) as I turn it. Remove and examine for seat contact. Raise/lower seat with appropriate angle cutters (or stones). Don't forget to check guide clearance.

Sorry, I just reread your post and now think that you are trying to lap only.
Not a good plan in my opinion. If that's all you can do, well, it's better than nothing, I guess. Think about it. You lap seat and face at room temp. Then you expect these areas to stay in alignment at operating temp......as I said, other may disagree......
