Battery connections.
Roady just put up a thread about " Odyssey batteries " and it got me to thinking, is there any reason why you couldn't use brass nuts on your battery connections? I would think they would be more conductive and more corrosion resistant than the steel ones! What's everyone's thought on this?

Re: Battery connections.
I dont see why it wouldn't work. Actually sounds like a good idea.

Re: Battery connections.
Don't see any reason for it. The juice is going through the cable and stud not the nut. Don't see anything wrong with it, but what good does it do for the system?

Re: Battery connections.
I think the nuts would be too soft and corrode easier than regular steel. I like a stainless nut for this application. The nut holds the cable down on the post base which is where the connection to the cable is made..... so the nut doesn't need to be conducting amperage flow... so much as just holding the cable to the battery solid.

Re: Battery connections.
I agree with Scotty, stainless would be my choice.
To avoid any galvanic corrosion the nuts should be as close as possible in properties as the post. The further they are apart on the galvanic chart the more corrosion you will get and it's even worse when the surfaces are wet. You already have dissimilar metals in the post (lead/stainless steel) so one of these would be best to stick with and lead is too soft so stainless steel is the obvious choice. Here is a copy of the galvanic chart for comparison: |

Re: Battery connections.
Excellent chart Doug! It makes sense to me. I'll get stainless nuts! I thought because the terminal ends are copper, brass would be better. I didn't even give the battery post a thought. You guys have me on the right path again! Thanks all!

Re: Battery connections.
You can get standard and heavy stainless hex nuts. I prefer the heavy which requires a 9/16" wrench instead of the 1/2" for the standard size.

Re: Battery connections.
I use stainless nuts on mine and they work well. You can get them at Lowes or Home Depot.
